“I went into the project not having done free jazz before. I wasn’t sure if I knew what to do, but I had a sense that I would know once it started. The feeling was of playing whatever came out spontaneously without thinking too much about it. Somehow I was able to trust myself. Some things were put forth by me and other things were more reactions to things done by others. In the end, everything seemed to fit. I think that it is interesting to apply some of the free jazz experience to a more structured environment. That is, to trust and allow things to come out knowing that you have worked enough on the structures (changes, forms, your vocabulary and concepts) so that you can just play.” John Serry (Re: the Carnival of the Aliens CD)
